The House Of The Seven Gables- Hawthornes Personal Reflections :: essays research papers
Nathanial Hawthorne. Considered to be one of the greatest American writers of the 19th century. But did you know that he hated portraits, and it is now thought that he was a mild manic-depressive? Born in Salem, Massachusetts on July 4, 1804. A decendant of a long puritan line of Hathorne's. His ancestry included his great-great grandfather, John Hathorne who was a judge at the Salem witch trials 112 years before Nathanial was born. Judge John Hathorne charged many with the crime of witchcraft, and condemned them to their deaths. Nathanial was embaressed by this and changed the spelling of his last name from Hathorne to Hawthorne. Alot of his family history, life experiences and where he lived influenced his writing greatly. Hawthorne had a cousin, Susannah Ingersoll. When he was young, in Salem, he would frequently visit her in her mansion, she lived there alone. The house had a secret staircase and once had seven gables. This house, Nathanial visited in his youth, was his inspiration for the house in his book " The House Of The Seven Gables". The story of The House Of The Seven Gables streches over two centuries. It's the classic scenario of two rival families, in this case the Pyncheons ( weathly aristocratic puritans) and the Maules ( humbler paupers). The story of these two families begins with Matthew Maule, who owned a certain amount of land and built himself a hut to live in, in this new puritan settlement. Maule was a hard working but obscure man, who was stubborn and protected what was his. His rival arrived at the settlement about 30 to 40 years after Maule had been there. Colonel Pyncheon, an ambicious and determined man, had a high position in the town. It was said that Colonel Pyncheon was very much for the execution of those who practiced witchcraft, and it was also said that he very strongly sought the condemnation of Matthew Maule for being a wizard. Pyncheon did manage to have Maule executed but not before Maule placed a curse on Pyncheon and his decendants. These were Maules exact words : " God, God will give him blood to drink !" Many of the characters in the book were influenced by actual people in and during Nathanial's life. For example : Colonel Pyncheon was based on The Reverend Wentworth Upham, a Minister and mayor of Salem. He wrote the books : Lecture's on Withcraft and History of Witchcraft and Salem Village. The Maule name was derived from Thomas Maule, a Quaker merchant living in Salem at the time of the trials.

Leadership versus Management Essay -- Expository Essays
Is every good manager a good leader? Is every leader a good manager? Leadership and management are often used in similar perspectives, yet they do not share the same meaning. Leaders are exactly what the name says - they lead team members to success. Managers, like leaders, have the meaning referenced in the name. Managers manage over employees, striving for success. The two titles can be used simultaneously with one person, but this is a rare occurrence. According to MSN Encarta Dictionary, the term manage has several meanings. One of the explanations state that to manage is to ââ¬Å"administer or run something - to be in chargeâ⬠¦and be responsible for its smooth running and for any personnelâ⬠(Encarta, 2008). MSN Encarta Dictionary also shows the meaning for a leader. The first definition states that a leader is ââ¬Å"somebody whom people follow - someone who guides and directs othersâ⬠(Encarta, 2008). These two definitions are similar, but differ slightly. A leader nurtures and guides the employees. A leader helps them on the way to success. A manager is one who is in charge and is ultimately responsible for the outcome. A managerââ¬â¢s first responsibility is the outcome of a task. This outcome is detailed by rules and regulations. The manager must ensure that employees are adhering to company policies in order to be successful with the task. This task may be one that the manager is personally handling or one that has been delegated to subordinates. The manager is held responsible for the completion of the tasks regardless of the quantity. Sometimes, the manager completes the tasks personally, while other times require the manager to assign tasks to certain employees. Family Guy vs the Simpsons
Khadijah Smith Enc 1101 Dr. Ford Family Guy VS. The Simpsons In comparison, both shows are great. Both shows have a dad that most of the time doesnââ¬â¢t have a clue and wives that make excuses for their behaviors but still love them more than anything. Both shows also have 3 children involved and a pet. They both seem to be either middle or lower middle class families. The contrast for the two shows would definitely have to be the type of humor used on the shows. The Simpsons has more a an entire family appeal to it while Family Guy has a lot more adult humor that parents today don't want their kids to watch or be subjected to.I personally would not care if my kids were to watch either one of the shows because they would know that they are just TV shows and that behavior on TV is not to be repeated in real life. Meaning, I would teach my kids whatââ¬â¢s acceptable for them to do and say and what's not. If I had to choose which show is funnier, I'd have to say Family Guy, but t hat is just my opinion. I just haven't seen The Simpsons in a while and Family Guy makes me laugh no matter how many times I watch each episode. The Simpsons is the archetype for cartoon serial satire. It started it all.Which is evident in the Southpark episode the ââ¬ËSimpsons did it' Plus Simpsons just had its 20th season which is nuts. I find lately the Simpsons has transitioned more towards a Family Guy model, having more random pop ins then full on episodes like their earlier seasons. ( Alec Niolan, Little Known Facts About ââ¬Å"the Simpsonsâ⬠) With 20 years of material they have covered almost everything already so staying fresh is hard. Family Guy has a liberal/progressive agenda and the creator can't keep his work separate from his politics. Family Guy is much more random, and hits a lot more obscure references to pop culture. The humor is more adult in Family Guy as well. The Simpson's daughter is intelligent, witty and misunderstood for her so-called liberal views , in my opinion. While Meg from family guy is awkward, unappreciated and abused. Bart and Chris are very similar, while Bart has more intelligence he just prefers antics. Chris is blessed with a much slower mind set. While the wives both nag, Lois is the more active while Marge is usually more passive. Whichever you prefer these two TV watching, middle class, beer drinking, couple canoodling; antic driven cartoon families will be on for many more years to come. The Simpsons is happy to take on all political persuasions. Although both shows are equally entertaining, the Simpsons have clear life lessons that are clearly portrayed. Such as, ââ¬Å"I'll keep it short and sweet. Family. Religion. Friendship. These are the three demons you must slay if you wish to succeed in business. â⬠The business world is becoming increasingly more cutthroat. In order to succeed, you have to be willing to give things up. Family only gives you more obligations. Religion makes you feel bad about you r difficult business decisions. And friends, well, in business there are no friends. Facts are meaningless. ââ¬Å"I hope this has taught you kids a lesson: kids never learn. â⬠While we want to believe that our children are smarter than the average nose picker, they all still make the same mistakes. At some point, even though it didn't work out so well for their friends, kids will ride their bike down the stairs, lick the frozen flagpole, and put their hand on the hot burner. Over and over again. â⬠You don't like your job, you don't strike. You go in every day and do it really half-assed. That's the American way. â⬠Company loyalty and job satisfaction are down.Yet everyone thinks they need the bigger house, the newer car, that fancy new toy. Rather than finding a job they really enjoy, they go to work miserable every day, put in the minimal effort, then go home to lounge in front of their big screen TV and complain because they don't have a bigger one. ââ¬Å"What a day, eh, Millhouse? The sun is out, birds are singing, bees are trying to have sex with them, as is my understanding ââ¬Å". American culture tries to protect our children from all things sexual. Racy television shows are put on late night when children are supposed to be asleep.Magazines are put on the top shelf where children can't reach them. While the intention is good, we are deliberately ignoring the fact that our children know all about sex, long before we give them ââ¬Å"The Talk. â⬠However, because we are not giving them good, accurate information at the appropriate age, they are becoming more and more confused, which is leading to an increase in STDs and teen pregnancy. Perhaps itââ¬â¢s time to reevaluate how parents approach the subject of sex. ââ¬Å"I feel that if a gun is good enough to protect something as important as a bar, then itââ¬â¢s good enough to protect my familyâ⬠.Gun control is a hot topic brought up at every election. Should we limit ac cess to them so the bad guys can't get one? Should we expand access to them so that the innocent people can protect themselves? Either way someone is bound to get hurt. We can only hope that it's the bad guys. The Simpsons are more original and portray clearer plots, as well as it is more clean when it comes to verbal usage and here are numerous amounts of lesson that are easily comprehended, even if it can be a bit sarcastic. In addition, therefore if there was a decision to be made between these two animated TV shows, the Simpsons would be a better choice.

363 Word on Being Disrespectful to Teachers
My 363 word on why I was being Disrespectful Iââ¬â¢m sorry for my behavior that day. I knew that I was wrong when I left the room without your permission. I should have stayed in my seat. I should have left when you called my row or my name. I know that I was wrong. That will never happen again. The reason why I had left was because I was trying to beat miracle to the locker because she take too long. And she takes up all the space. I know that, that was childish.I know I need to be more respectful because I have been really disrespectful to you. And I promise that it will never happen again. Will I get those same grades bake that you didnââ¬â¢t get put in because I really need that? I have been working on my behavior. And the bad behavior I have been given will change. Sometimes when I have a bad mood I will be very disrespectful. Sometimes when I am disrespectful is when somebody has done something wrong to me.Or when another teacher or adult blame me for something that I do wrong. But what I did wrong doesnââ¬â¢t concern a bad day. I donââ¬â¢t remember if my attitude was a good attitude, but I know that my behavior was on point until at the end of the class period. We should respect our teachers because if we donââ¬â¢t respect people that are more complex and more experienced than us it will reflect on us earlier down in our lives.Teacher Cadet EssayAlthough sometimes our teachers may make a fool of us and humiliate us and sometimes embarrass us in the cruelest ways we should not retaliate in a bad way. If we know all the rules in the school we should report it to the principal or someone that is a part of the school and is able to tell the teacher that he/she is doing something very, very, very, very, very wrong. Instead we should always ask the teacher if you can please leave the room to go to my locker. I should have just waited until you called my row.

Gender Differences in Leadership Essay
1. What are the strongest points of the paper? What do you consider are its main contributions to the field of global people management? The paper itself has a very interesting purpose with the research question of whether women leaders are ââ¬Å"reallyâ⬠different from men leaders. The paper gives a very good introduction in particular giving the literature review in order to get familiar with some basic knowledge on the topic of gender differences in leadership. The review focus combination of stereotypes and cultural differences stresses out well a new viewpoint of the problem, which has not been discussed that widely in prior research. Also the introduction of the new notion ââ¬Å"stereotype threatâ⬠, which actually might be viewed as a partly solution for women sometimes performing not as well as they possibly could is an interesting point for management issues in reality. However the strongest points of the paper are evident. The introduction of the new concept of three paradigms: gender-blind view, gender-conscious view and that perception creates reality are not only the strongest points of the pap er, but in my opinion can also be considered as contributions to the field of global people management. This new paradigms could possibly change the perception of companies, maybe companies will use the tool of the three paradigms to analyse their own structures and be able to improve situations for women, giving them more possibilities. 2. What are the weakest points of the paper? (E.g. What arguments are not strong enough? What is not clear? What is missing?) Potential drawbacks are that paradigms are introduced, but not sufficiently discussed within. Also the paper gives good examples where they can be found, it could show more proof for their existence apart from summarising and drawing them together from old findings. Also the paper does not find a good way how to manage diversity and to capture it. It does not manage the combination of cost-effective coordination and senility to local cultures. Likewise the paper focuses on only two firms, ââ¬Å"Fuelâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Excelâ⬠, which are very different in how they ââ¬Å"fillâ⬠out the paradigms. In my opinion two firms are not enough, more firms should be reviewed for example in a questionnaire in order to give more support for the findings. Correspondingly the paper does not include a focus on multinational firms, which is very important not to leave out in times of globalization. The last criticism is that the paper is unable to answer itââ¬â¢s paper purpose question à ¢â¬Å"what is the real difference between men and women in leadershipâ⬠. 3. How could the author make the paper better? When writing the literature review the could build up the research papers and the gained knowledge chronologically and not going back and forth in the research dates. As the paper is missing some numbers, the technique of hypothesis could have been used, a bigger number of companies questioned in survey style as then a quantitative analysis would exist as evidence for whether the problem exists in real life and whether paradigms can be implied in the general management world. Also the point of view of women on this topic would be very interesting and more expedient. How do women perceive the gender different initiatives, what would they like as support? Also the paper as already mentioned should include a focus on multinational firms and include those in a study.

Cheating in College Essay
In the article, Cheating in College by Scott Jaschik published in Inside Higher Ed (September 2012), we look in depth as to why we as students sometimes cheat and are okay with it. A scandal took place at Harvard University that had to do with cheating, and what professors and educators could do about stopping students from doing so. Professors from various universities asked many questions regarding the article and seemed interested in helping with the matter. ââ¬Å"Is cheating getting worse?â⬠Jaschik answers back with several things. They had done a study to test how many students were cheating in 2010 and shows declining in cheating. They planned to do more tests in 2012. Students try and justify that cheating is okay because itââ¬â¢s simply ââ¬Å"the real worldâ⬠and believe they can use Internet for anything because itââ¬â¢s faster and easier. Studies found that students that have time management issues are the ones doing most of the Internet using and cheating, but also they argue that while asked to do something for an employer, they donââ¬â¢t have enough time to come up with original work and need factual information so it makes it okay. The article also compares information to generations before. ââ¬Å"â⬠¦students do not appear to be less aware of moral implications associated with cheating, but have convinced themselves that what they are doing isnââ¬â¢t cheatingâ⬠. Students came up with excuses and rationalized choices that made morals become invalid and convince themselves that there is no other choice. Cheating on more written assignments rather than testing is the difference between cheating throughout the generations. Colleges are now trying to find ways to better educate students so they donââ¬â¢t cheat. They came up with an honor code to build more of an ethicalà community and culture throughout the University. Not all universities have jumped onto the Honor Code idea, but they are finding new codes everyday to help with the issue of cheating in colleges. Cheating in colleges is an issue all around the United States, and coming up with ways to prevent the issues is what the article is trying to do. Itââ¬â¢s trying to get educators to come up with a way, such as an honor code, to get cheating to stop on campuses.

Professional and Academic Skills Development Assignment
Professional and Academic Skills Development - Assignment Example I normally set time to reflect on whatever I have learnt during the day (in the evenings) and at the end of the week. Depending on what I have experienced, I ask myself if i liked the experience or not and how the experience or theory applies in real life. After reading an article on the hierarchy of needs, I reflected on the authorââ¬â¢s arguments and realised why people consider security as a matter of priority in life as opposed to gaining wealth. You were asked to work in groups of 3 or 4, to pick a topic and to find relevant references from four different sources (e.g. newspaper, journal, internet and book). Please list the references below, using the correct form of Harvard reference for each. I have learnt that teamwork is important when undertaking major tasks especially. Through teamwork, people get to learn from one another. It is important to appreciate other people and be a keen listener for teamwork to be a positive and enjoyable experience. In order to be effective when a member of a team, i need to learn how to appreciate peopleââ¬â¢s cultures. This way I will be able to understand their world views and appreciate why they act or speak the way they do. Giving a presentation before a multitude of people first normally hits me with tension. In order to overcome my tension, apprehension and fear, I did my research on the subject I had to present thoroughly. That way, my confidence grew as I knew that I had great ideas to present. I also encouraged myself that my group members and audience wished to see me succeed. I will take time to write and rehearse mock speeches so as to be more comfortable in public speaking. I learnt a lot from the library tutorial. I learnt how to search sources using various criteria for example with the author name or title. I also learnt the various sources that I may use for my research including books and journals. I am currently confident that my library skills are sufficient. What did you learn from
